Bluetooth Peripheral Device Broadcom

How do I know which Broadcom Bluetooth device driver I need?

If you're having trouble with your Broadcom Bluetooth peripheral device, Broadcom would seem like the logical choice for obtaining a device driver for it. However, Broadcom doesn't support end-users. Broadcom supplies its products to computer manufacturers that include them in their systems. Though Broadcom doesn't offer support for end-users, it has made a generic driver for Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 computers with Broadcom-enabled embedded or USB plug-in Bluetooth wireless adapters. This generic device driver is available at:

If the generic driver doesn't work for your Bluetooth peripheral device / Broadcom adapter, you will need to use the support resources offered by the manufacturer that bundled the Broadcom adapter with your computer. For example, if you have a Dell computer, check with Dell for an updated device driver for your computer's specific Bluetooth peripheral device (Broadcom).

In order to find the correct Broadcom drivers at your computer manufacturer's website, it's best to start with your computer's model number rather than a broad search. For example, if you go to Dell's support section and enter "Broadcom Bluetooth" into the search box, you'll receive a list of numerous device drivers for Broadcom devices. Knowing which one to choose would be a difficult task.

Instead, start by going to your computer's manufacturer website (in this example, we'll use and click on Support. Find the section for Drivers and Downloads. Dell's Drivers & Downloads page immediately prompts you to enter your "Service Tag" which is a 5 or 7-digit code affixed to your computer or Bluetooth peripheral device. Broadcom devices don't have this code – you want to enter your computer's code here. If you can't find the code, you have an option to let the support website try to detect it or you can choose your computer's make and model from the list. Other manufacturers use a similar process.

Next, choose the correct operating system for your computer and follow the prompts to view available drivers for your exact model computer. For example, as of this writing, the Dell Alienware Area-51 computer running Windows 7 64-bit uses the following Bluetooth peripheral device Broadcom driver:

In this example, the Dell Bluetooth peripheral device Broadcom driver is listed under Network Drivers for that particular computer model. By narrowing results down to the specific make and model of your computer and selecting the correct operating system, you should be able to find and download the correct device driver for your system.
